Mental & behavioral health professionals in practice often find it hard to be active policy advocates, because we are uncomfortable, and/or lack the skills and experience to engage. This workshop highlights the importance of engaging in social and political action. Knowledge vital to interacting with various levels and systems of government will be provided. Communications with elected and non-elected officials will be explored. Coalition building will be highlighted. We will brainstorm advocacy areas ripe for professional involvement of mental and behavioral health professionals, make a plan for social and political action, get the work started, and prepare for future action.

Qualifications:
Kathryn Krase, Ph.D., J.D., M.S.W., Principal Consultant with Krase Consultant, is a social
worker, lawyer, educator, researcher, and life-long policy advocate. Dr. Krase has taught social
welfare and social policy courses for the past twenty years, at the undergraduate, master’s and
doctoral levels. She has years of experience consulting with government and community based
organizations to develop policy & practice standards.

- 1. Ethical principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, and justice.
- 2. Explain how ethical codes call on mental and behavioral health professionals to be active policy advocates at the micro, mezzo and macro levels.

mental health professionals
2) Ethical Context for Mental & Behavioral Health Professionals as Policy Advocates

b. Introduce four basic ethical principles for mental and behavioral health
professionals
c. Connect various ethical codes of mental health professions to the obligation to
advocate for policy change
3) Policy Advocacy at the Micro, Mezzo and Macro Levels: Knowledge and Skills
a. 60 minutes
b. Introduce/revisit important knowledge related to policy making
c. Introduce/revisit opportunities for policy advocacy for mental and behavioral
health professionals.
4) Practicing Policy Advocacy at the Micro, Mezzo and Macro Levels
