Description

Sexual functioning is multidimensional and may be influenced by biological and medical factors, psychological experiences, relationship dynamics, and ethical, social, religious, and cultural considerations. Couples therapists therefore need a structured and sensitive method for gathering both individual and couple sexual histories. This intermediate-level webinar introduces a biopsychosocial framework for assessing sexual functioning within marriage and committed relationships. Participants will examine relevant assessment domains, including emotions, sensations, thoughts, medical concerns, attitudes and values about sexuality, prior sexual experiences, religious and moral beliefs, sexual orientation, couple dynamics, intimacy patterns, and power struggles. Through didactic instruction and a brief case-based exercise, participants will practice selecting clinically relevant questions and organizing assessment information to develop a more comprehensive understanding of a couple’s sexual concerns.
