The course will describe a conceptualization of religious OCD that can help clarify for clients and therapists how to address these symptoms. Specifically, the course will focus on differentiating between what aspects of religious behavior are considered OCD and what are actually religious in nature. A case presentation will be included to illustrate the ideas.

  •  Review of OCD (15 mins)
    • definitions
    • phenomenology
    • review of subtypes
  • Discussion of scrupulosity/moral/religious OCD subtype (10 min)
    • How it presents
  • Difficulties associated with treatment of religious OCD (25 mins)
    • How symptoms may overlap with normative behaviors and rituals
  • Reviewing a conceptualization of religious OCD that can help overcome these difficulties (40 mins)
    • learning to distinguish between OCD and normative behavior
  • Case vignette (15 mins)
