10:00 AM - 12:00 PM EST

Understanding Non-Suicidal Self-Injury and Increasing Safety: A Trauma-Informed Approach

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has increased over the past 10 years, especially among children and adolescents. This training course is ideal for clinicians and school-based staff who want to better understand ways to support students who have urges and engage in NSSI.

The presenter will challenge misconceptions about how discussions surrounding NSSI are approached.  Training participants will learn about the features of NSSI and have the opportunity to discuss risk and protective factors influential in the increase or reduction of NSSI in youth.  The course will review trauma-informed interview questions and interventions with the goal of generating comprehensive safety plan efforts.  Participants will engage in discussions surrounding ways to best communicate with students, caregivers, and coordinate continuity of care with other educational staff and community-based resources.

Counseling Black Women

THIS WORKSHOP IS NOT RECORDED

This training session, Counseling Black Women, focuses on helping mental health professionals develop culturally humble strategies for working with Black women. The session begins with an introduction to the concept of cultural humility and a discussion of attendees' initial thoughts and expectations for the training. Participants will explore common challenges Black women face, such as navigating societal pressures and stereotypes, and discuss how these issues influence mental health. Attendees will engage in reflective exercises designed to increase self-awareness, particularly regarding power and privilege in the therapeutic relationship. Through group discussions and interactive activities, the session aims to equip participants with the tools necessary to provide culturally responsive care that honors the unique lived experiences of Black women. The training concludes with a review of key takeaways and how participants can apply these insights to their future counseling work.
