The Danger of Hope™: Creative Methods for Emotional Processing
10:00 am - 1:00 pm EST
After a Behavior Specialist starts using "creative methods" with 9th graders at a Detroit public high school, she is accused by the students of being a "witch." The students struggled to understand how the use of art could make them feel comfortable discussing traumas they had vowed to lock away forever.
The presentation will incorporate clips from the performance of “The Danger of Hope™” which chronicles some of the stories of these 9th graders' introductions to creative methods. The performance clips will be followed by a presentation of research about creative methods. After discussion and self-reflection activities, participants will have the opportunity to practice and facilitate the creative methods that are introduced. Participants will learn about two creative therapeutic methods that can be used with students for support in emotional processing.
Are YOU ready to help your clients journey to healing through art?

Oh, You Got Jokes Now: The Role of Humor as Intervention in the Clinical Relationship
1:45 pm - 4:45 pm EST
This class provides a "deep dive" into the ethical and mindful use of humor as intervention in psychotherapy and other helping professions. Over the course of the class, participants will learn about the known history of humor in our species and in the psychotherapy profession. The research about humor, both as used in psychotherapy and as studied more widely, will be reviewed. We will explore humor in light of various theories including power dynamics, CBT, DBT, and SFBT.
Through all of this, several primary purposes and uses of humor will be identified. We will also explore potential signs that humor is the wrong choice in the moment. The instructor will share their own experiences with using humor well in session, and participants will have the chance to share their own stories.
