Webinar Description

This workshop will bring an awareness about the increase of therapy coinciding with the increase in family estrangement. This course explores the ethical challenges clinicians face when supporting clients through family estrangement. With a focus on the principles of beneficence and nonmaleficence, participants will examine how to navigate the emotional and relational complexities that arise when individual well-being may conflict with broader family dynamics. Through clinical examples and guided discussion, the course will highlight the importance of understanding the nuanced definitions of estrangement, as well as the diverse experiences of those affected. Clinicians will gain tools for assessing potential risks and harms in estrangement-related cases while maintaining an ethical framework that prioritizes both client autonomy and relational integrity. Emphasis will be placed on identifying the competing needs within estranged families and on how to ethically balance the best interests of individuals with consideration for family systems as a whole.
