When parents have a child who has some special educational, emotional and/or medical needs, it can create insurmountable demands on the parents' life. All these demands come in addition to the parents' already existing responsibilities. The parent most likely does not have the education or training to maneuver in this uncharted territory. The clinicians and other social service providers can help their client (the child) most effectively by assisting the parents learn how to field this new world in the most effective way possible.
