Class 1

Exploring Professional Responses to Child Neglect

10:00 AM - 1:00 PM EST

Reports of suspected child neglect make up more than three-quarters of all reports made to child protective services in any given year; 6 times more than reports of sexual abuse, and 5 times more than reports of physical abuse. However, neglect reports are least likely to be substantiated after investigation. The reality is that reporters of suspected child maltreatment struggle with appropriately identifying and reporting this type of maltreatment. This session will explore the legal and ethical obligations of professional reporters, especially as they relate to the concept of child neglect. Various types of child neglect, including physical neglect, medical neglect and educational neglect will be explored, along with a significant conversation around parental supervision and the use of corporal punishment. Practical strategies for intervention with families will be offered and discussed.

About the Presenter

Kathryn Krase, Ph.D., J.D., M.S.W., Principal Consultant with Krase Consultant, is an expert on the legal and ethical implications of professional practice. She has authored multiple books and articles on the subject. She has years of experience consulting with government and community based organizations to develop policy & practice standards.

Class 2

When Should I Be Concerned About Someone’s Parenting? What Can We Do to Help? Exploring Case Studies in Child Neglect (3 Hours)

1:45 PM - 4:45 PM EST

We all became mental health professionals for a reason: we want to help. However, helping can be complicated, especially when it comes to families. It’s hard to distinguish problematic parenting from child maltreatment. Poverty and substance use disorders can make it more difficult to evaluate a situation. As mental health professionals, it is even more complicated, because we’re legally obligated to report certain suspicions to child protective services. This session was developed to help you understand the considerations you should make when you have a concern about someone’s parenting. We’ll explore common case studies to identify practical strategies for intervention with families that meet our legal and ethical obligations.
