Class 1

10:00 AM - 1:00 PM EST

Trauma, Triggers, and Tools for Mental Health Providers

Behavioral escalation can be an ongoing, challenging issue with clients with mental health and substance use disorders. Developing skills and competence to help de-escalate verbal and behavioral outbursts is essential. It's also important to recognize how providers can contribute to an environment that triggers past trauma responses as well as safe spaces where clients thrive. This workshop will explore crisis intervention as well as post-crisis.

Participants will examine themes of countertransference, the impact of trauma, and the use of modalities including motivational interviewing, harm reduction and mindfulness to address client escalation.

(Trainer - Juan Olmedo, LCSW, is a psychotherapist in private practice as well as an instructor and trainer. As a therapist, his goal is helping people make changes, cultivating more effective coping strategies and living more fulfilled lives. As a trainer and teacher, he strives to collaborate with colleagues and students to build knowledge, increase skills and grow as clinicians. He is licensed in New York and Georgia and has worked with people from diverse communities, including LGBTQ folks, people of color, immigrants and Latinos (in English or Spanish), helping them deal with anxiety, depression, relationship challenges and the impact of trauma.)

Class 2

1:45 PM - 4:45 PM EST

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy

Of the many couples therapy modalities currently in existence, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) is the only evidence-based modality considered effective for treating couples, with a goal not only of reducing conflict but of fostering and deepening the connection and bond between partners.

This three-hour introductory course will provide clinicians of all levels of training with an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of EFCT; the structure and process of EFCT; and the foundational elements of a clinical approach to working with clients using EFCT. As an experiential model, EFCT is best demonstrated through an emotional experience, so this workshop will make use of emotionally-driven videos; interactive role-plays; and a live presentation of EFCT in action. At the conclusion, participants will be able to verbalize the unique elements of EFCT; apply these elements to their own practice; and determine if this modality is the right one for them to invest in further.

(Trainer - Simi Lichtman, LCSW, is an ICEEFT-certified EFT Couples and Individual therapist. Simi specializes in working with survivors of trauma, as well as with couples, and is trained in sex therapy. In addition to EFT, Simi is certified in MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD, and as a Building A Lasting Connection facilitator for premarital counseling.)
