Class 1

Renegotiating intimacy when painful sex occurs in a relationship: A male support group perspective

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM EST

Painful intercourse can occur for reasons that range from structural problems to psychological concerns. Many women have painful intercourse at some point in their lives. The impact of female genital pain on the partner can be overwhelming and there is a strong need to renegotiate intimacy when painful sex occurs in a relationship.

The webinar aims to gain insight into understanding painful intercourse focusing on the partners perspective through theoretic models for the role of the partner as well as providing evidence from a support group.

The content is relatively new in the sex therapy field with regards to understanding the partners perspective. There is known support and literature for women who experience pain during sexual intercourse but little study has been submitted on how important support is needed for the partners and how lack of support impacts the relationship.

As a result of my fieldwork with partners (men) who have been coping with their partners suffering from vaginal pain during sexual intercourse, I established a successful support group allowing the partners to express themselves in a nonjudgmental environment with others are experiencing the same or similar situations with their partners. The support group composed of partners who came from both religious and secular backgrounds.

More research needs to be focused on the partners perspective as according to the literature there is not enough focus on the partners coping skills as well as the importance of support groups

Class 2

Sex therapy and physical disabilities

3:15 PM - 4:15 PM EST

Sexuality remains an issue of concern and often despair for a great deal of couples with one or both individuals have physical disabilities.

This webinar will address the misapprehensions and barriers to healthy, accessible sexuality for people with physical disabilities. It will provide therapists with tools to assess the needs, motivation capabilities and concerns of their clients, even without expertise in the field of disabilities.

We will discuss using their client's specific familiarity with their abilities and preferences, to seek sexual satisfaction.
Beyond the work focused on the clients, we will also look into our own hesitations and discomfort regarding unconventional erotic and sexual acts.
